This order of E7s was delivered from EMD in 1946 to the Alton Railroad. In 1947 the Alton was merged with the Gulf Mobile & Ohio and their name was quickly painted ver the existing name. They remained in this scheme for most of their life up until Amtrak.

These diesels were assigned to the Abraham Lincoln, Ann Rutledge and other GM&O passenger trains serving Chicago.
